Scottish golf

Scotland has a strong golfing heritage dating back to the 15th century and nowadays has the most golf courses per person in the world!

With names such as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods having played here, you will be following in truly impressive footsteps at some of the best Scottish golf courses.

The Renaissance Club

The jewel in the crown of Scotland’s golfing coast is the Renaissance Club in Dirleton, current home to the Scottish Open, which in 2025 takes place 9th-13th July.

This course is perfect for all abilities…and for pitting yourself against the greats!

East Lothian golf courses | Gullane

Another bucket list course is Gullane No.1, one of three courses at Gullane Golf Club.

With over 350 years of golf having been played here, this club has played a major part in the history of the Scottish game.

This particular course hosted the Scottish Open in both 2015 and 2018, while Gullane No.2 has hosted qualifying rounds of the Open Championship.

East Lothian golf courses | Gullane

A short walk down the road to Gullane and you will find Muirfield, another must for your Scotland self-catering golf holiday.

Home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, this course has hosted 16 Open Championships; Phil Mickelson was the most recent winner in 2013.

East Lothian golf courses | North Berwick

The third and final imperative for your golf break is North Berwick Golf Club with its spectacular views of Bass Rock and the Firth of Forth.

The club’s West Links course is one of the oldest in Scottish golf; only the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews having played longer on the same piece of land.

We have plenty of self-catering holiday lets in North Berwick for you to choose from, with Sandstones Apartment and Apartment Sula Bassana just a stone’s throw from North Berwick Golf Club.

Musselburgh golf

For further historical experiences, we recommend Musselburgh, which is home to several golf courses near Edinburgh.

Start with Musselburgh Links, the original Open Championship venue from 1874 to 1889.

This is supposedly the oldest course in the world, with evidence dating back to 1672.

Surrounded by Musselburgh Racecourse, its 9-hole links offers the use of hickory clubs so you can truly enjoy the game as it was played in its heyday.

Another great course is Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, the sixth oldest club in the world and home to the Old Club Cup, which dates back to 1774.

We have two great holiday lets close within a 15-minute drive of Musselburgh.

The spectacular Ark at Anchor Apartment is situated in Joppa and has beautiful views of the Firth of Forth.

Birchbank at Chesters Farm is a pet-friendly holiday home down the road in Haddington located in a picturesque countryside setting.
