Why East Lothian

A coast made for families

East Lothian has miles of magnificent coastline, golden beaches, rolling countryside, spectacular cliffs, award-winning attractions and the world's finest selection of golf courses, all within a short drive of your door.

The region is perfect for a family holiday at any time of year, whether you have a week to spare or just a three-night short break. Our seaside hotspots for families, North Berwick, Gullane and East Linton, all put fabulous kids activities and family fun close by.

Our self-catering homes range from cosy two-bedroom cottages to large six-bedroom houses, so there is space for everyone. Wherever you stay, the beach is rarely far away on Scotland's sunshine coast.

Things to do

Ideas for every day of your stay

History or adventure, quiet beaches or busy days out, there is something here for all the family.

Golden beaches

Miles of clean sand from Yellowcraig and Gullane Bents to North Berwick's two bays and Belhaven Bay at Dunbar. Perfect for rock pooling, paddling, dune walks and sandcastles.

World-class golf

The world's finest selection of links, from the historic West Links at North Berwick to the three courses at Gullane, with Muirfield and The Renaissance Club close by.

Bass Rock & seabirds

The Scottish Seabird Centre at North Berwick harbour has live cameras trained on the Bass Rock, home to one of the world's largest gannet colonies, with seasonal boat trips to see puffins and seals.

Castles and history

Clifftop Tantallon Castle stands opposite the Bass Rock, while Dirleton Castle has one of the world's longest herbaceous borders. Both are wonderful for exploring with children.

Kids activities

Keep everyone occupied for hours at East Links Family Park and Foxlake Adventures, with its cable wakeboarding and aqua park, or walk through Concorde at the National Museum of Flight.

Coastal walks

The John Muir Way threads along the whole coast, linking beaches, harbours and clifftops. Wander the dunes at Aberlady nature reserve or take the dog along miles of open sand.
