Edinburgh’s festival season is the highlight of our capital’s annual calendar, with everything from jazz to comedy on offer and performers attending from around the world.

East Lothian also offers great festivals throughout the year, from Fringe by the Sea to top musical performances at the Lammermuir Festival.

Edinburgh Fringe festival

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the place to be if you like comedy!

View shows from up-and-coming artists, as well as experienced performers, at a wide variety of venues across the city. 

With free and ticketed shows there is something for all budgets at the Edinburgh Fringe. 

If you want to explore beyond comedy there are other great performances on offer in the form of theatre, circus, music and spoken word.

Edinburgh International Festival

The Edinburgh International Festival is at the forefront of Edinburgh’s festival season. 

Since 1947 this festival has been delighting audiences with music, dance and theatre from around the globe. 

There is also a unique opportunity for Scottish singers to join together in the Festival Chorus, an auditioned choir formed each year to perform with world-leading musicians.

Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

International performers also come together each August for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

With shows throughout the week on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, the Tattoo sees pipers, dancers and musicians put on a fantastic spectacle, which is always rounded off with a firework display!

Edinburgh International Book festival

Edinburgh also offers something for book lovers during August, with the Edinburgh International Book Festival taking place at the Edinburgh Futures Institute. 

This festival offers something for all tastes and, with events taking place in person and online, is accessible to all.

Attend talks from top authors such as JK Rowling, Ian Rankin and Margaret Atwood and enjoy the largest public celebration of writing in the world.

Scottish International Storytelling Festival

Another great Edinburgh family event is the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, held each October.

Absorb yourself in fascinating stories with live storytelling, talks and discussions at the Scottish Storytelling Centre on the Royal Mile.

Festivals in East Lothian

Fringe by the Sea, North Berwick

The festival season doesn’t just take place in Edinburgh each August!

East Lothian also boasts top events, including Fringe by the Sea which occurs each year in North Berwick’s Lodge Grounds.

This festival welcomes everybody from local artists to world-famous names and covers comedy, music and literature and more. 

North Berwick International Highland Games

August also welcomes thousands of people to North Berwick’s International Highland Games from Scotland and abroad.

Top spectacles at the games include Highland Dancing, a Massed Pipe Band and even an International Pipe Band Contest which sees groups competing from as far afield as Australia and New Zealand. 

Lammermuir Festival

After the excitement of summer East Lothian continues to welcome music at the Lammermuir Festival. 

This wonderful festival is inspired by the beautiful landscape and architecture of East Lothian and celebrates music in the towns and villages from the coastline to the Lammermuir Hills.
