Play the historic West Links at North Berwick, in continuous play since 1832, and the three courses at Gullane. Open venue Muirfield and The Renaissance Club, host of the Genesis Scottish Open, are minutes away, with Dunbar, Craigielaw and Kilspindie along the coast.
Miles of golden sand run from Yellowcraig and Gullane Bents to North Berwick's two bays and Belhaven Bay at Dunbar. Ideal for rock pooling, dune walks, paddling and windsurfing, with woodland backdrops and island views.
At North Berwick harbour, live cameras track one of the world's largest colonies of northern gannets on the Bass Rock. Seasonal boat trips head out to the Bass Rock and the Isle of May to see puffins, seals and seabirds up close.
Dramatic Tantallon Castle stands on the cliffs opposite the Bass Rock, while Dirleton Castle has one of the longest herbaceous borders in the world. Explore Hailes Castle by the River Tyne and the grand rooms of Lennoxlove House.
Walk through Concorde at the National Museum of Flight, try cable wakeboarding and the aqua park at Foxlake near Dunbar, and browse vintage cars at the Myreton Motor Museum. Climb North Berwick Law for views across the Forth.
Eat lobster fresh off the boat at North Berwick's harbour, or book Tom Kitchin's Bonnie Badger and Chez Roux at Greywalls in Gullane. Along the coast are The Creel at Dunbar, Steampunk Coffee, Falko's German bakery and Alandas gelato.
The John Muir Way threads along the whole coast, linking beaches, harbours and clifftops. Wander the dunes at Aberlady nature reserve, follow the Tyne through Haddington, or take the dog along miles of open sand.
Direct trains reach Edinburgh Waverley in around 30 minutes from North Berwick and 25 from Dunbar, so the castle, festivals and Old Town are an easy day out. Glenkinchie Distillery, Edinburgh's local Lowland malt, is close by.
