There is even an outdoor boating pond on North Berwick's East Beach, ideal for paddling.

Get outdoors in East Lothian

If it's the great outdoors you're looking for we have it in abundance, with miles upon miles of beautiful beaches, perfect for picnics, rock-pooling or dog walks along the sandy bays.

There are lots of places to visit, from castles to farm parks! You can even try your hand at wakeboarding at Scotland's first cable wakeboard park, Fox Lake.

East Lothian also has some great children's play parks, suitable from tots right through to teens, including the Lodge Grounds and the Recreation Park.

Lauderdale Park in Dunbar is situated within a walled garden, complete with café for coffee and cakes, while at Yellowcraig Beach there is an adventure play area with woodland walks leading to the beach.

There are many walks in East Lothian suitable for all capabilities! North Berwick Law and Trapain Law (near East Linton) for example are volcanic plugs which are very easy to climb and offer wonderful views.

The tourist information centre will be able to guide you on the best places to go.

Stunning beaches in East Lothian

Yellowcraigs

A beautiful wooded area with a great children’s play area and lovely walks through the trees, set on the shore of the Firth of Forth on the outskirts of the lovely village of Dirleton.

This can be accessed either by car or by walking along the beach from North Berwick.

North Berwick Beach

Two minutes from the High Street, it also has an outdoor pool next to the Seabird Centre.

Seacliff Beach

This a beautiful, private bay beach with parking available. It is located on the main route from North Berwick heading for the A1 south. You can find it on a sharp bend just after Tantallon Castle.

John Muir Beach, Dunbar

Just off John Muir Beach is a great play park located next to East Links Family Park.

It has a large climbing frame, a flying fox and all the usual big outdoor park equipment. It has lots of room and seating for a BBQ, and a large free car park.

John Muir Beach itself is made up of crossing flat sand dunes and leads to another stunning beach as long as the eye can see.

Rainy day activites in East Lothian

In wet weather the Scottish Seabird Centre is certainly worth a visit. Work your way round the different Discovery Centre Zones, where there are interactive live cameras to zoom in on the wildlife on the Firth of Forth islands.

There are also plenty of indoor soft play areas at North Berwick Sports Centre and Dunbar, providing the utmost in aquatic fun with its flume, wave machine and water features.

Haddington Sports Centre has a dedicated children's pool ideal for kids learning to swim too.
